Volunteers Make It a Family Affair

Mary Otocka admits she is not much of a "joiner" when it comes to groups. It turns out that the National Charity League is something different–and for her, something better. Otocka could hardly resist the chance to be directly involved in giving back through a New Canaan chapter, and spend time with her daughters, including Alex Yuditski, in the process.

"There are so many philanthropies about going to a silent auction, having a gala, getting dressed up, writing a check, buying a table. That didn't interest me," Otocka said. "Anything you want to do is available and it's really what you make it. There are a nice variety of activities."

Otocka is serving her first term as president of the league's Canaan Parish chapter, one of two chapters in New Canaan. The nationwide organization encourages mothers and their daughters to volunteer in their communities. From working with blood drives for the American Red Cross to serving with Meals on Wheels, the women and girls in the league like to help people at close range rather than from a distance.

Otocka first donated her time with the league alongside her eldest daughter, 18-year-old Kiki Yuditski. Now that Kiki is headed to Trinity College, Otocka will continue her works with her youngest daughter, Alex, 15. While first-year members usually are asked to commit to 15 hours of philanthropy, Otocka said she and her daughters have contributed between 80 to 100 hours of service. She and Alex expect to continue their work throughout the year.

Being a three-sport athlete at New Canaan High School, Alex said she most enjoys the events that promote physical fitness, such as Special Olympics in Trumbull. But she's also enjoyed the camaraderie among the girls in the league. "There's a strong sense of unity within the individual groups," Alex said. "I've grown to know a lot of girls I wouldn't ordinarily have met given normal high school circumstances. As it turns out, I've made friendships with a lot of interesting people."
