Sun Stirs Summer Thoughts in New Canaan

As Ramonita Reali enjoyed a walk Wednesday in the outfield of a baseball field in Mead Park, she felt sorry for anyone cooped up in an office.

“Every day should be like this,” said Reali, a special education teacher who spent her afternoon with New Canaan High School student Nick Evarts. “We should keep this weather.”

Most people out and about in New Canaan on Wednesday would not argue with her. Plenty of New Canaanites and Fairfield County residents took to the outdoors to walk, play soccer, ride their bikes or relax under a shady tree on the warmest day of the spring. With temperatures rising into the 80s, Reali and others were hoping the good weather would remain through the Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer. Forecasts are calling for temperatures to stay in the high 70s and low 80s on Thursday and Friday under partly cloudy skies. Scattered thunderstorms are possible Saturday, but skies should be partly cloudy Sunday and Memorial Day with temperatures near 80 degrees.

Reali was more than happy to leave a long and difficult winter in the past. “We had enough of the snow. It was bad,” she said.

Jessica Cardoza of Stamford said the weather has her ready for the Memorial Day weekend – and good summer foods, including light salads and white wine.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Cardoza, visiting Mead Park with her son Marco, 1. “He likes to get in his new wagon and go outside without so many clothes. We’ve been waiting for it, and we’re glad it’s here.”

Aimee Michalsky of Stamford, visiting Mead with her three children, enjoyed a simple pleasure. “There’s no snow. Finally,” she said with a laugh. “It feels good.”
