Summertime Slowdown Hits Town

When Mickaela Fouad and Jenn D'Angostino went shopping on their vacation in New Mexico this summer, they noticed a few differences from the shops they see at home in New Canaan. "There are cowboys walking around," says Mickaela, whose family has a house there. She says the stores in the Southwestern town she visited tended to sell vintage clothing, cowboy boots and leather.

It seems as if New Canaan slows down a little in the summer, when residents like Mickaela and Jenn go away on vacation. Resident Delia Mowat notices one difference in the town this time of year: "There are parking spaces in the streets," she says. Like many of her neighbors, Delia is taking two trips this summer—one to visit family in Scotland and one to Utah to hike and take photographs of the state's national parks.

The Upson family recently returned from a European vacation, which took nine months to organize. From their home in New Canaan, they worked out plans to fly to London and take the EuroStar train through the chunnel to Paris. "We did everything," says mom Kate. "The Tower of London, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower ..." Emily, Kate's daughter, says her favorite part of the vacation was the French bread. "The food was just amazing in France," Emily says.

Teresa Simpson, a sales associate at Design Solutions on Elm Street, says the home furnishing store's business definitely slows down during the summer months when families like the Upsons are away. "You can see a drop—traffic is low. So you have to work harder and pursue decorators," she says.

Though many families leave New Canaan during the summer, it can be a mini-vacation destination for people from surrounding towns. "We just had triplets, so we're not going anywhere," says Aimee Michalsky, a Stamford resident who came to New Canaan with her husband and four children to shop on Saturday. "This may be a little vacation."
