Campers Meet New Canaan's Birds of Prey

STAMFORD, Conn. — Thursday is movie day for the Explorer camps at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, and this week the campers watched a Harry Potter movie. So it made sense that they would meet a couple of owls during a birds of prey presentation.

The feathered friends included a red-tailed hawk, an American kestrel, a barn owl and a horned-owl, all of which make their home at the New Canaan Nature Center. The introductions were made by Melanie Pearson, director of animal care at the New Canaan Nature Center, and Lisa Monachelli, senior environmental educator from the Stamford Museum & Nature Center

The two experts walked around the kids with the birds, explaining what they eat, where they live and how to identify them. The naturalists also fielded a slew of questions from the campers, such as why were the owls awake when they're nocturnal.

“She’s not sure if you’ll help her or eat her,” Monachelli said as she showed off the barn owl. Three of the birds were rescues and had suffered wing injuries. The barn owl had not been injured, but since it was raised by humans and could not survive in the wild, it was adopted by the nature center.
