Spring Tour Takes Garden Lovers Around Fairfield

“If you love flowers, landscaping and gardening, Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens' spring tour will give you great ideas for what to do with yours,” Dianne Farley said while standing in the garden she built outside her Stamford home.

Farley, along with fellow garden lover Sandy Paget, are the co-chairs for the annual Garden Tour and Spring Fling Party to be held June 10th and 11th of this year.

The tour will include themed gardens on the Bartlett Arboretum campus as well as five home gardens in New Canaan, Stamford and Pound Ridge that have been executed by graduates from the University of Connecticut’s master gardening program. Having completed the 16-week program herself, Farley said the event will provide practical ideas for function and design.

“It is useful to those of us who like to piddle around our gardens to see what opportunities are out there.”

The committee is careful not to give away any of the private gardens’ exact locations just yet, but Farley did describe one in particular as “phenomenal,” because of its combination of meadow, vegetable and pool gardens as well as its forested walk garden.

“It’s wonderful to do the event because it brings us together as a community and we all work together to make visitors entranced by the gardens,” she added.

As for Farley’s own self-described "secret garden," she has planted everything from peonies to daffodils to leafy Hostess plants that frame the front of her house. The goal is to have a succession of bloom, which ensures there is a plant blossoming all year round.

To kick-off the weekend event, Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens will be hosting the Spring Fling in the Garden Reception Room as well as opening night of the “Garden Rooms by Design” showcase on Thursday, June 7th from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.
