Some Will Labor, Others Loaf

Shirley Phelps loves New Canaan and enjoys working as a receptionist at the New Canaan Nature Center. But as beautiful as she finds the town and one of its major attractions, she's eager to get away to New Hampshire.

"They have fields and nice lakes and I won't have to worry about [Hurricane Earl]," Shirley said. "It's a little more laid back and country."

Plenty of locals will travel out of town for the Labor Day holiday, squeezing in one last weekend of fun before fall arrives and the demands of school and work make long trips more difficult.

Linda Pape, a teacher at Playland Nursery School, plans to spend her weekend at a beach in Stamford. The sun worshipper loves an opportunity to hit the beach and has done so several times over the last three months. "I'm a summer person," she said. "It's hard to go back to wearing boots, long pants and sweaters when you're used to flip-flops."

Hunter Stanfield, 20, who works at Varnum's Pharmacy on Main Street, plans to look for cool things at a flea market. It's hard for him to do a big trip, having just moved back to Wilton from Nantucket Island, Mass. "It's nothing special," he said. "That and I'll spend time with my family."

Some residents, however, will stick around to work or just try to avoid the raindrops expected to come Friday with Hurricane Earl. Anna Valente-Krolikowski, a lifelong resident and owner of the Baskin-Robbins on Main Street, will spend her weekend serving up scoops. She's hoping the rain won't scare people away. "I'll be working with my employees," she said.
