NEW CANAAN, Conn. Brooke Yancy thought she could finally relax. The 19-year-old had been to several opening nights of previous Harry Potter movies and book releases. Some were in New York City, where the crowds were huge and sometimes crazy.
So at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Yancy figured it was smooth sailing the crowd outside New Canaans Playhouse Theater for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 seemed barely a crowd at all. Tonight, I get to relax and have a seat, Yancy said as she waited with her brother Jackson, 11, for the theater to open for the 12:01 a.m. Friday showing.
Then, just before 11 p.m., everything changed. Dozens of other Potter fans made their way to the Elm Street theater, smiling, shouting and anxiously awaiting the last of the movies based on the popular J.K. Rowling books. I got my crowd. I know, right? Yancy said, abandoning a nearby bench for the front door and one of the first spots in line.
Would you expect less on a night with a full moon?
The dozens waiting for the debut of the last Harry Potter film were as excited to see it as they were the previous films. Brian Queally, 20, dressed in wizards garb, had high expectations after enjoying the previous Deathly Hallows movie. I think its going to be great, he said.
His fellow aspiring magician, Laura Valk, had not been impressed with the last film and was hoping for better. But she was sad to see the Harry Potter movie franchise come to an end. Its a little bittersweet, she said.
With Playhouse general manager Janet Amezquita confirming that the first official New Canaan screening was sold out, Elliott Maynes, 20, crossed his fingers, hoping for a little Potter magic to get in for the first screening. Im the one with the high hopes, he said. You have to have hope.
