Photog Puts Pups in the Picture

A camera in her hands and a dog at play in her viewfinder is all Becca Nell needs. Whether it's her own Chili Dog, a mutt she adopted last year, or a pair of pooches checking out something interesting at a dog park, the pictures rarely fail to put a smile on her face.

Now she's hoping to put some smiles of other people's faces with her display of dog, horse and nature photography at the Bank of New Canaan, 208 Elm St. Her "Hounds, Horses and Habitats" exhibit will be at the bank until mid-November. It features dogs at play, dogs resting with their owners and the graceful beauty of horses.

Nell, 31, who lives in Norwalk, traces her fascination with photography to her youth in Long Meadow, Mass., when she would take the camera out of her mother's closet.

"With animals, you can't plan ahead. It's truly capturing the animals," she said. "Animals are au natural." Last spring, Nell got the itch to take pictures at Spencer's Run, a fenced dog play area in Waveny Park, where she usually brings Chili Dog to socialize.

"I just started taking pictures and one thing led to another," she said. Her exhibit opened with a reception at the bank on Thursday. For Nell, the photo show is something she never expected. "This is the wildest dream. It's been an amazing experience," she said. Proceeds from the sale of photos will benefit Spencer's Run.
