Patrons Get Filled up at Burger Joint

Almost every day since The Filling Station on South Avenue opened on March 1, New Canaan resident Orlando Andujar has ridden his bike to the restaurant. And almost every day, he orders the same thing: a double-cheeseburger with two slices of tomato and cheese fries.

"It's cheap, and it's delicious," Andujar said of his meal. "And it's fresh."

Co-owners Nicholas Type and Seth Leifer are proud that the restaurant has these qualities, but they say it's the fresh part that makes them unique.

"I think it's important to know where your meat is coming from, and in this day and age, to know where your milk is coming from," said Type, a Darien resident.

The Filling Station serves organically raised meat from a cooperative of local farms, and the milkshakes are made from hormone- and antibiotic-free milk. Type said residents likely the healthy fare and the low prices. He estimated that the restaurant has served more than 50,000 customers since it opened.

"We wanted something that would be a perfect match, something that would work well for Fairfield County—it needed something like this," Type said. "We were so lucky to find this location and this town, and I really am so happy to be here." The Filling Station was inspired by roadside joints that serve food that fills up customers quickly, he said.

Customers like Andujar come in to watch their burgers and hot dogs "supercook" in 50 seconds, then choose from more than 25 toppings, including a mustard bar and four types of onions.

Andujar sticks to his two slices of tomatoes, but he's not complaining. "I thought it was a supply store or something, because of the name," he said with a laugh. "But I tried it once, and I just got hooked on it."
