Femia replaced Dr. Lewis R. Goldfrank, who will continue to serve as the Herbert W. Adams Professor of Emergency Medicine. Considered by many a founder of modern emergency medicine, Goldfrank will remain focused on improving access to care, enhancing public health and advancing medical humanitarianism — both in New York and around the globe.
Femia joined NYU Langone in 2011 with nearly 25 years of experience in emergency medicine. He previously served as the executive vice chair of emergency medicine, where he oversaw several multidisciplinary initiatives and led the design and implementation of numerous innovative programs that have strengthened operations, patient care and safety, outcome metrics, financial performance, and external relationships.
“Dr. Femia brings a depth and breadth of experience and expertise in emergency medicine and program development, making him the ideal person to lead our already stellar department to even greater heights,” said Dr. Robert Grossman, the Saul J. Farber dean and CEO of NYU Langone.
“I am confident that under his leadership, the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine will continue to provide exceptional clinical care and training for the next generation of physicians.”
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Femia and his team directed the opening and operations of the post-Sandy Urgent Care Center, as well as the deployment of NYU Langone’s emergency department physicians to multiple hospitals while its own facility was closed. In 2014, he played an important role in the reopening of the new Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services in Manhattan and NYU Langone Cobble Hill, a free-standing emergency department in Brooklyn.
Femia earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Connecticut and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Michigan State University Hospitals. He also received an MBA in at Indiana-Wesleyan University.
He is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American Association of Physician Leadership and the New York College of Emergency Physicians.
