New Canaan Toasts Angelina Di Feo on Turning 100

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – It’s a safe bet that Angelina Di Feo has seen a lot of change in the world and in New Canaan. That’s what a century of living can do for you.

Now she’s the ultimate toast of the town, celebrating her 100th birthday.

“I feel good right now,” the birthday girl said from a chair in Anthony’s Hair Salon, the Cherry Street establishment owned by her son, Anthony. She felt even better after being made up by Anthony’s stylist, Arturo Soto.

Di Feo was born on Sept. 8, 1911, in San Mango sul Calore, a small village in Italy. She came to New Canaan in the 1960s. How South Avenue has evolved is probably the most noticeable change she’s seen in her years in town.

Though she mostly speaks Italian, the smile on her face was understandable in any language. Throughout the day, she received calls from friends and family in Italy and New Canaan, wishing her all the best. She was also feted by First Selectman Jeb Walker, who declared Thursday Angelina Di Feo Day in New Canaan. “It’s nice. It’s good,” Di Feo said through her daughter Carmalinda.

The Di Feo family planned to have a simple dinner Thursday to celebrate. But more than 100 guests are expected for a larger party Sunday at Continental Manor in Norwalk. “She’s just a fabulous, wonderful woman,” said family friend Ginny Moreno.
