New Canaan Sewing Group Stays Close Knit

Creativity, charity and plenty of recommended reading keep Cathie Seton, with a needle in her hands, as a member of the New Canaan Sewing Group.

“I’ve never come out of it without a good book recommendation, a good recipe or some travel recommendations,” said Seton, who lives on Oak Ridge Road. “It’s a really good group.” Members get together to make fun, pretty and bright creations. It's a chance to show off their own creativity and to just sit around and talk with each other about what’s going on.

The Sewing Group has 125 members. Members of its subgroups meet weekly to talk or to brainstorm new ideas. Many of the group's members were encouraged to join by President Ruth Witt.

Barbara Beall, a member of the group for about 11 years and chair of the annual Spring Boutique sale, said she enjoys the camaraderie and using what she’s learned to benefit others, even though she mostly puts the finishing touches on others’ creations.  “It’s sort of cheap therapy in a lot of ways,” Beall said. “It’s a way to share advice. It’s a very satisfying experience.”

Kathy Graveraux, who now lives in Norwalk, is celebrating her 20th year with the Sewing Group. She enjoys being around the other ladies, whether they are making dresses for dolls or oven mitts. Graveraux says she's never failed to learn from her weekly sessions of sewing and knitting. “When you have a talent, you like to use it,” Graveraux said. “Here’s my opportunity to use it for the good of the community.”

The Sewing Group will hold its annual Spring Boutique sale April 15 at St. Mark’s Church on Oenoke Ridge Road. The Spring Boutique is one of two annual sales the group holds. Proceeds will be used to fund grants for several local organizations. The group also hosts a holiday sale in November.
