New Canaan Quiet, Happy About bin Laden's Death

The way Susan Helie sees it, the death of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden is a jolt to the spirit of all Americans.

“I think this is something that America really needed,” said the Southport resident, walking with a friend along Elm Street on Monday morning. “It brings us all together in a positive manner.”

Monday morning in New Canaan did not see the same wild and loud celebrations that took place late Sunday and early Monday in New York City and Washington. But the mood among visitors to downtown New Canaan was happiness mixed with relief in knowing that American forces had killed the al-Qaida founder in Pakistan.

Ellen and Robert Brookman of Providence, R.I., were in New York City over the weekend, and Ellen said she found out when a special news report interrupted “Brothers and Sisters” on television.

“I was surprised. It’s been 10 years. It’s a good thing, but it’s something so many people were waiting for,” said Ellen, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., who said she saw the Twin Towers' being built.

“It’s good for the families, but it’s too bad that killing someone is good,” Robert Brookman said.

Cameron Mason, 21, out for a jog Monday morning, was succinct with his reply. “It’s great day for America,” he said. “I feel like the country is more united. “

New Canaan Fire Chief Ed Karl was also muted. “This is a time to be more vigilant and not celebrate,” Karl said. “Terrorist organizations (either al-Qaida or homegrown) may take this opportunity to promote their cause. But it is a step in making America a safer place.”
