New Canaan Pilots Keep Their Eyes on the Sky

Less than a day after pouring rain drenched New Canaan, Bill Fiore and Roger Kleinert were in Waveny Park watching Fiore’s radio-controlled model airplane take flight. Friday was the first time this year they could fly a plane outdoors.

“It’s windy, but it’s pretty good. It’s not bad at all,” said Fiore, a member of the New Canaan Radio Control Society, a local chapter of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. “It’s better that being dressed up like the Michelin Man.”

As the weather gets warmer, the club expects to resume its regular schedule of meetings to fly planes on Sundays, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Kleinert says 15 to 20 members make it to Waveny Park on an average weekend to touch the skies. Fiore said he became interested because his parents were both pilots. He also has his pilot’s license, but the radio control club lets him take to the skies in a different way.

The model flyers were not the only people taking part in springtime activities Friday. Plenty of visitors took to the park to enjoy walks with their dogs. A man and two boys were also playing catch, complete with baseball gloves.

New Canaanites should get used to milder weather. Forecasts are calling for mostly clear skies and high temperatures in the 50s for Saturday and Sunday. There will also be more time to enjoy the sun as Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, so don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour.
