New Canaan Merchants Take to the Sidewalks

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – While you and your New Canaan neighbors slept Saturday morning, Liz King and her co-workers were setting up outside The Linen Shop for the big event of the summer. They had sidewalk displays to get ready, including seven 8-foot tables to hold items from the store.

“It is fun, but it’s a lot of work,” King said Friday. “We plan for it every year.”

“It” is the annual New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale, a popular event at which merchants do a little extra business and break the monotony of the summer doldrums. Most downtown stores will have displays outside their stores with items on sale.

King, co-owner Alicia Taylor and the staff of The Linen Shop planned to be up at 5 a.m. Saturday. Even with the hot temperatures, King said she and the staff would be ready to go.

“It’s important to us. A lot of our customers have told us that they’re coming,” King said.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said the sale is a major attraction for downtown, giving visitors a chance to see the stores and merchants an opportunity to clear out their summer merchandise. “It’s a way to get some deals of the century,” she said.

In addition to the sales, the event will feature performances from the New Canaan Town Band, magicians and other entertainment.  Murphy added that the warm temperatures will not keep people away. “It’s always hot,” she said. “It won’t be as bad as (Friday).”
