New Canaan Hits the Streets for Townwide Cleanup

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Someone has to pick up all those cigarette butts, coffee cups and paper bags littering Elm Street, and this weekend that task will fall to Tucker Murphy and a team of New Canaan volunteers.

“It makes everyone aware of what you toss out, and it makes the town all the better for it,” said Murphy, executive director of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce.

The downtown pickup, taking place all day Saturday, is part of the annual townwide Clean Your Mile organized by the Town of New Canaan, the Chamber of Commerce, the New Canaan Rotary Club, the New Canaan Garden Club and TD Bank.

It will find Murphy and at least 25 others, including members of both town chapters of the National Charity League and the Service League of Boys at New Canaan High School, scooping up trash along Elm and Main streets as well as other downtown stretches.

“It’s just a great community effort for people to take pride in the area,” Murphy said.

Volunteers are also expected to clean other streets in town. Trash bags and gloves will be available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 91 Elm St., New Canaan Town Hall, the Inland Wetlands office at Irwin Park and the TD Bank location at Grove and Elm streets. Dumpsters will be available at the Lumberyard parking lot off Elm Street to drop off trash.
