New Canaan Gardener Gives Credit Where Due

According to New Canaan resident Carol Seldin's code, when someone does exceptional work, they should be acknowledged for it. To that end, she's goes out of her way to make sure the people who preserve the beauty of her gardens get the credit -- and maybe some business as well.

“My role is that of a nurturer, along with my husband. In our family, local businesses, the community and civic projects, it's just part of the way we think and live our lives,” says Seldin as she surveys the greenery outside her home. Crews from ODD Job Landscaping tend the gardens and lawns throughout her six acres she calls Dogwood Hill. Greek gods and figures peek out from behind bushes and trees, hidden in numerous green enclosures. Seldin knows every planting and revels in a chance to walk along hidden paths and point them out.

Hundreds of visitors who've seen her gardens during benefit tours for various New Canaan charitable efforts have also reveled in them. A photo shoot will appear in Moffly Media's magazine, atHome, next spring, and show off their grandeur.

Seldin laughs and declares she was the “Flower Lady of Hoyt Farm” where she previously lived. She's an active board member of the Garden Center of New Canaan and tends to her own triangle in town. She also happens to be a certified master gardener. In short, she knows her way around a garden.

She also knows that her home's gardens are too large to manage on her own. While noting that some people like to live with the illusion of self sufficiency, Seldin would rather give credit where it is due.

“Dan (ODD Job Landscaping Owner) started working on our Hoyt Farm home. I've worked with him hand in glove to develop this property,” says Seldin. She shows her appreciation by letting him use her yard for advertising, and even showing prospective clients its grounds.

Allowing her pristine home setting to promote a business circles back to Seldin's personal code. “I have high standards and with those, enormous appreciation for people who do whatever it is they specialize in well,” she says, as the sun streams along her property's paths and peeks into its secret garden enclaves.
