Madeline Macankas busy season is under way. She and the staff of the Bon Fleur floral boutique on Cherry Street in New Canaan are cutting stems and making arrangements with different types of flowers in preparation for Mothers Day, the single busiest time of year in the floral industry.
Inside the sweet-smelling shop is a group of hardworking women, making sure the arrangements are just right. Valentines Day is bad, and Mothers Day is 10 times worse, Macanka said as she looked through some Lisianthus plants that will go into arrangements for the big day Sunday.
Shes expecting her staff to be at its busiest Friday. If the weather is good Saturday, even more business will come their way. Everyone feels guilty, and theyve got to make sure they get something.
Not everyone has a significant other, but everyone has a mother or a mother figure they want to make feel special, she said. Youve got your mother, your grandmother, the aunt who acts like your mother, your sister, she said. Thats a lot of people.
Macanka says shell finally be able to rest at about 7 p.m. Sunday. Then it will be time to prepare for the St. Lukes School and New Canaan High School proms in the next two weeks.
"I've done this for 20 years. I should be used to it," she says.
