New Canaan Farmers Market To Reopen in May

New Canaanites will once again have a place to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables while enjoying time outside with their neighbors this spring and summer. The New Canaan Farmers Market is returning.

The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a request for the Farmer’s Market to operate at the former Center School parking lot off South Avenue on Saturdays from May 14 to Nov. 19.

Alexis Gazy, one of the market’s organizers and a vendor since 1999, said people continue to visit the market to get fresh produce and enjoy a nice day outdoors with their friends. “It’s a wholesome weekend fun activity,” Gazy said. “People meet and chit-chat and reunite at the farmers market.”

Gazy, who lives in Oxford, is among the vendors at the market. Customers typically enjoy getting the sweet corn and tomatoes, she said. This year’s market will also feature crafts and live music. “It’s a pleasant location for the weekend. You’ve got good food, good vibes and a good atmosphere,” she said.

Gazy said it also serves as a good educational tool for children to learn about the source of different food. The only change the Board of Selectmen made is that dogs will not be permitted at the market because of potential health concerns.
