NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Dr. Peter D’Adamo of New Canaan is not one to sit still. After writing “Eat Right 4 Your Type” in 1996, a New York Times best-selling book that suggests eating particular foods based on your blood type to achieve better health, he went on to write 18 more on nutrition and healthy living.
As of this week, he can add another four to his library. “The Eat Right 4 Your Type Cookbook” -- one for each blood type; O, A, B, and AB -- have been published by Penguin books.
D’Adamo, a naturopathic physician who resides in New Canaan, collaborated with Ridgefield-based chef and cooking show producer Kristin O’Connor, to create 150 recipes for each book. The easy to prepare, contemporary recipes include breakfast, lunch, dinner, side dishes, and even desserts, and also features a menu planner, pantry stocking advice, diet tips, and other suggestions for a healthy lifestyle.
According to D’Adamo, his goal in creating the cookbooks was to provide a simple guide for people to follow when they decide to undertake the blood type diet.
“These unique, personalized cookbooks amplify a very simple message that I have worked to educate the public about over these last three decades: that eating intelligently can be simple, inexpensive, tasty, and fun,” D’Adamo said.
The partnership between D’Adamo and O’Connor developed as organically as the vegetables they heartily recommend. O’Connor said that after becoming a patient of D’Adamo, she started to incorporate the recommended foods for her blood type into her daily diet. In doing so, she realized the need for a simple kitchen guide to help those who were less adept in recipe development. When she approached D’Adamo with the idea, he was intrigued and together they started to map out a plan to create the four books, which went on sale nationwide on Oct. 1.
“To combine my philosophies on health with my love of cooking has been a dream come true,” O’Connor said. “I came to see Dr. D’Adamo as a patient and I have never been healthier; but more than that, I have been able to see first-hand how dramatically he changes the lives of so many patients who read his books and follow his nutritional advice. I believe these cookbooks will make life easier, and certainly tastier, once you have started to eat right for your type,” she said.
D’Adamo’s books are available locally at Elm Street Books in New Canaan and online at amazon.com.
