New Canaan Car Service Owner Drives, Makes Sandwiches

When Hoyt Livery opened 25 years ago on Cross Street in New Canaan, it owned only two cars: a Lincoln stretch limousine and a Cadillac. The limousine and car service lot now contains more than 60 vehicles, and the business is continuing to grow, said owner and founder, Santo Silvestro.

“I guess it’s the entrepreneur in me,” said the New Canaan resident. “I like opening businesses.”

Silvestro also owns New Canaan Auto Body next door and the Vegetable Barn and Deli across the street.

Silvestro said he and his family are directly involved in all the businesses they own. For example, even though he now has a fleet of cars and employees, he and his son Anthony still go out on service calls and help in the auto body shop when needed.

“We still drive people to the airport, we paint, we tow and make sandwiches [at the Vegetable Barn and Deli] when we have to,” he said. “That’s what it takes to be an entrepreneur.”

Silvestro said he originally had the idea to open a car service because he thought it would be fun to own a limousine. Now, so many years later, the self-described “jeans and T-shirt kind of guy” is still enjoying the ride — and he always sits in the front seat.

“It’s been great. We have had our ups and downs, but I love what I do,” Silvestro said.
