Polly Boeschenstein is a fan of life's simple pleasures. She prefers that her children not play video games and instead take a walk in the park or enjoy a pony ride. "I think we all need to step back," Boeschenstein said.
Which is why she's looking forward to the annual New Canaan Nature Center Fall Fair. The 41st annual celebration begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nature Center, located at 144 Oenoke Ridge.
The day's activities will include apple sling shots, pony rides, a hay maze, cupcake and pumpkin decorating and harnessed tree climbing. The most popular event figures to be the pie-eating contest, said Nature Center spokeswoman Hilary Wittman.
Wittman said the laid-back nature of the fair is attractive for many people. Last year it drew nearly 4,000 people, she said. "What makes it so great and unique is that it's very traditional," Wittman said. "The activities, everything is outside and it's for all ages."
Boeschenstein, 42, serves as a co-chair on the fair committee and will volunteer for a fourth year. She's loved the fair since her daughters, Ellie, 8, and Margaret, 6, attended preschool at the Nature Center. Boeschenstein said she appreciates the chance for families like hers to enjoy a fun autumn day without so much noise. "It's just a nice day where everyone slows down and everyone steps back a bit. It's such a wonderful spot to spend the day," she said.
Ellie and Margaret are looking forward to the weekend. While Ellie wants to get her face painted, Margaret plans to try bungee jumping.
"It's encouraging kids to just be kids and play and be part of their surroundings," Boeschenstein said.
Admission is free, though tickets to enter events will cost $1 each. For more information, contact the New Canaan Nature Center.
