Allison Fitzpatrick, 10, was hoping for a little rescheduling. Morning rain over New Canaan prompted the cancellation of the towns annual Memorial Day Parade. But after the skies became bright and sunny at about 11 a.m., Alison would have preferred a postponement.
I dont know why they just didnt delay it, said Alison, a Girl Scout who was all set to march along Main Street. The sun is out, and we would have had our ceremony outside.
Instead, hundreds of New Canaanites, military veterans and civilians, packed into a crowded Town Hall to say thanks to the men and women in uniform who have been killed serving the nation.
Peter Barrella, the grand marshal of the 2011 parade and a Korean War veteran, said he hated hearing the Korean War referred to as a conflict considering how many people died and how many U.S. soldiers are still missing in action. Its not a conflict. Its a war, he said.
Barrella said all Americans should take a moment to give thanks to those who have taken up arms in the nations defense.
Outgoing First Selectman Jeb Walker, an Army veteran, was also honored for his military service and time in town government.
Peter Langenus, commander of the New Canaan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 653, said the parade was called off at about 7 a.m., keeping in mind the aging veterans and children who would be participating. Though its disappointing not to have the parade, Langenus said it was nice to see a full Town Hall pausing to give thanks to the veterans.
New Canaan is a terrific town. Its what every small town and big city should be, he said.
For all of Allisons disappointment, she was happy to get a free cup of vanilla ice cream from Baskin-Robbins. This is good, she said with a smile.
