McEvoy Wants To Keep Park Natural

Some people may not see the cornfields at Waveny Park as anything special, but George McEvoy believes the spot is the perfect place for an evening stroll.

"I'm a big hiker and jogger, and I like the woods," said McEvoy, a town resident for 42 years. "It's always been a part of my life."

McEvoy is a member of the Waveny Cornfields Alliance, a group of residents and town officials who want a minimalist approach taken with the cornfields area of Waveny Park, located east of the pond near the castle.

The Cornfields Alliance formed about two years ago, responding to concerns that the cornfields area might be used for additional athletic fields or outdoor theater. For McEvoy, 71, the fields should be kept as pristine as possible for light walking or jogging.

"The dog park is fine. The ball fields are fine. It's part of what it should be," he said. "But some of the park should be left in a natural state so you can enjoy the peacefulness of the park without hearing civilization."

The Cornfields Alliance proposed a plan of clearing shrubs and removing choking vines from trees, replanting the fields with natural grass and flowers, and adding trails to the cornfields. The alliance is working with the Parks and Recreation Commission and Assistant Public Works Director Tiger Mann on preserving the cornfields, he said.

The group is waiting for the Public Works Department to finish its dredging of Mead Pond. The dredged materials are being hauled there. Town officials plan to let the dredging dry and then pack it into the ground before planting wildflower seed just as they did there after the dredging of Mill Pond.
