Local Author Visits Book Club

Weston book lovers were treated to a visit by a published author earlier this month. Wendy Walker joined more than a dozen members of the Weston Newcomers and Neighbors Club at the home of Jenny Mitchell to discuss her first novel, “Four Wives,” which takes place in New Canaan.

Walker, who lives in New Canaan, answered questions and explained the obstacles to getting a book published. "It was fascinating to talk to an author about how to get published," Mitchell said. "I've been with the group five or six years and it's the first time I've seen an author visit the club." A group of women from the WNNC and the Weston Women's Club also meet as a book club.

Walker also provided hints to several aspiring writers in attendance. "She doesn't have a writing background, no English degree, which I thought was interesting," Mitchell said. "She's not a member of any writing groups. She found a college professor who helps her with her writing."

"She is very charming," said Terry Hulley, who runs the book club. "I know something about publishing, but she told us a lot of the problems she was having with marketing.”

Hulley, who worked in the publishing field before she retired, said Walker contacted the WNNC to discuss the possibility of including “Four Wives” in the book club's rotation. "After reading the book, I thought it would be an interesting book for the club to read," she said.

The club reads nine books a year, mostly fiction, Hulley said. Some of Walker's other published works include “Social Lives” and “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Power Moms.”

In the spring, sports writer and commentator Frank Deford will join the group to discuss his latest novel, “Bliss, Remembered.”
