Lobsterfest Proves Worth the Wait

Margaret Hebard, who had missed more than a decade's worth of Lobsterfests, said that one luscious bite of lobster meat was well worth the wait.

"I enjoyed it very much. It was just perfect," said Hebard, 91, as she wiped a little butter from her fingers. "I hope I get to take some home."

The Rotary Club of New Canaan spent the weekend satisfying many cravings for the succulent seafood as part of its annual Lobsterfest fundraiser that has taken place for 25 years. Hundreds of people traveled Friday evening and Saturday afternoon to the New Canaan Historical Society to get their fill.

It is the Rotary Club's biggest event of the year, said Andy Kerchoff, chairman of the Lobsterfest committee. Kerchoff expected to cook and sell more than 1,400 lobsters over the weekend. Several Rotary members placed lobster meals on plates or into plastic bags for pickup.

"People look forward to having their lobster," Kerchoff said. "It's a tradition to end the summer and begin the fall."

Nick and Donna Squitieri started dining almost immediately after arriving at a table with a couple of friends who had polished off their lobster meals in five minutes. From the first bite, they knew they had not gone wrong.

"It's perfect," Donna Squitieri said after a few bites. "It's better than any 5-star restaurant." Nick Squitieri was more succinct. "Oh yeah, it's working," he said.

The Rotary Club will donate the proceeds of Lobsterfest to various local and international charity organizations. The group expects to raise about $30,000 for the weekend.
