League Provides Fun and Fellowship

Lauren Clancy spent more than a decade moving among London, Tokyo and Stamford while working with UBS. But when Clancy, 32, came back to town four years ago, she wanted to make friends outside of the office and help out in her community. Her social circle and volunteer calendar have filled up, thanks to her membership in the Young Women's League of New Canaan.

"I was interested in finding a community of like-minded women," said Clancy, who joined the league about three years ago at a friend's suggestion. She is now the group's membership chair.

The group, which began in 1973, is a social and community volunteer organization with more than 200 members. Members volunteer at several town events and raise money for grants to be given to area charities.

Clancy said she has enjoyed the fellowship and such experiences as stuffing chocolate candy in plastic Easter eggs for the annual hunt at Waveny Park and volunteering at a holiday market sale held every November at Waveny House. Members also volunteer at the George Washington Carver Center and help stuff envelopes for the New Canaan Public Library's annual fundraising drive.

"It's a nice way to get involved and you can make it what you want," she said. "It's not totally consuming."

Though most members are in their 20s, 30s and 40s, there is no age limit and the league has several senior members. The league will host a recruitment cocktail social at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and a coffee event at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Clancy's home at 31 Clapboard Hill Road.
