Kathy McShane decided two years ago that she wanted to quit her job in marketing and open her own business. She worked with a group called Ladies Who Launch, an international organization that helps women like her get started. She liked the program so much that she found her new business as well leading New Canaan's chapter.
"I just loved it so much, and I got so much out of it, that I decided I had to buy it," McShane said. Victoria Colligan started Ladies Who Launch in 2002 in her hometown of Cleveland. It has since spread to 50 cities. McShane bought the Fairfield County branch in July and centered the venture in New Canaan.
One key aspect of Ladies Who Launch is education, with a series of workshops to help women turn an idea into a profitable business. It also offers help for existing business owners as well.
"What we know is women learn differently than men, and they manage businesses differently than men," McShane said. "All of our workshops and resources that we offer women are geared toward that insight we have about them."
Under McShane's direction, the New Canaan chapter is also providing an opportunity not normally provided: startup capital. Along with other branches in the tri-state area, she's started a partnership with Jones New York for a grant competition. The five women with the best ideas will take a share of $30,000.
Even after their businesses get off the ground, McShane helps the women by keeping them together. She often plans events for successful and hopeful small business owners to get together to network. "We very much try to work within our circle of Ladies Who Launch, " McShane said. "It's a lot of education, a lot of networking, and a lot of support."
