Harry Potter Casts Magic Spell in New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Harry Potter is casting his magic spell in town. With the eighth and final movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," scheduled for release at midnight Thursday, New Canaan Library Executive Director Alice Knapp said all the Harry Potter material was off the shelves Friday.

Then she found one audiobook in the children's section that had just been returned. "If one is here, it just goes back out," Knapp said. "People are getting ready for the last movie. Both the staff and (visitors) are talking about it."

Knapp said New Canaan residents are as excited as everyone else for the final Harry movie, and in advance of its premiere, she's expecting "plenty of people" to arrive to the library Monday at 1 p.m. for a Harry Potter movie marathon. All seven previous films based on the popular J.K. Rowling books will be shown for those who want a refresher course on all things Harry Potter.

Area cinemas aren't the only ones about to reap the benefits of Harry mania. Bookstores across the region already have and expect sales to be brisk again in the coming weeks.

"We sold out of book seven at one point, but we are almost out of books one and two. I think when the movie comes out, people who haven't read it want it," said Mary Murphy, a sales associate in the children's section at Diane's Books in Greenwich. "We have had a lot of buzz. It is a big deal," Murphy said.

"J.K. Rowling came here years ago. I wasn't working here at the time, but my whole family came. We got all of them signed. I have four that are first edition signed by her," Murphy said. "Diane [the store manager] even had dinner with her a few times, and somewhere in here she signed the wall."
