Gas Prices Pain Some in New Canaan

Surging gas prices have made Alyssa Dicosmo more selective about how she travels. Dicosmo, a 17-year-old senior at New Canaan High School, says she’s tried to do more fun stuff locally and share rides with friends as the price at the pump rises.

“I’m really trying to stay around New Canaan as much as possible,” she said, including skipping lunch trips to Darien. “It’s getting hard for people to get around.”

The price for regular unleaded at the New Canaan Gulf station on South Avenue was $3.95 a gallon Friday. Other gas grades are above $4 a gallon, giving people a reason to gasp when they look at the posted prices. Dicosmo gets a little break since her parents pick up half her fill-ups, but it’s still something she’s careful about. “It’s getting to be ridiculous.”

Rob Mueller, 21, says he hasn’t changed his habits much, though he only spent about $15 when he fueled up at Kean’s Korner Mobil on South Avenue. “You can’t really change too much and let it affect your life,” he said, though he expects to carpool a little more.

Jody Osborn of Hemlock Hill Road said she’s adjusted her driving habits and tries to walk more and shop in town rather than go to malls in neighboring towns. She hopes people will be encouraged to use mass transit more frequently to get where they want to go.
