Former New Canaan Students Play Letterman's Late Show

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Two former New Canaan students made their national music debut on the "Late Show With David Letterman" Thursday night.

Zachary Cole Smith and Andrew Bailey, two former St. Luke's School students, make up half of the indie rock quartet, DIIV. They performed their single "Doused" on the CBS late night show.

Smith and Bailey met while at St. Luke's, where Bailey's father, Guy, serves as assistant head of the School for Teaching and Learning. Smith said in an interview that he was expelled from St. Luke's during his sophomore year. Bailey graduated in 2003.

British music magazine NME named DIIV's premiere album "Oshin" the No. 12 best album this year. Pitchfork, a popular Internet publication for independent music, also premiered two singles as Best New Tracks in April and May.

Smith, who has toured nationally with other acts, has said in interviews that he got into music early on, learning how to play guitar from his mother's boyfriend. Bailey caught on later than his St. Luke's counterpart.

"I never planned on being a musician," Bailey said in an interview with a Seattle blog. "It’s just something I wanted to do for a hot minute before I decided I had to start being a grownup."
