Fitness Path Gets Thumbs Up From New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The field of dreams for Judi Anders and Tina Rosenfeld is nowhere near a cornfield in Iowa. It’s inside Waveny Park, merely a hop, a skip and a jump from Waveny House.

It is a place where the women expect everyone will gather for fitness, fun and community.

Anders, president of the Special Education Network of New Canaan, and Rosenfeld, co-owner of the New Canaan New Balance store, were among those celebrating recently as the Town Council approved plans for an 11-piece fitness path inside Waveny Park, not far from the community soccer fields. All that remains is ordering the equipment from Greenfields Outdoor Fitness and having it installed by fall. SPED*NET needed the Town Council to sign off because it involved use of town-owned land.

“We’ve had just positive reactions,” said Anders. “We’re happy to see it come to fruition.” The fitness path concept has received plenty of community support, she said, and she expects many residents will use it. It will give the elderly and people with disabilities a place to get fit and be active with everyone else in New Canaan.

“It’s something they can do with the community to feel included, to feel comfortable socializing and interacting,” Anders said. “It’s important because it can be isolating to be a senior or to be disabled. This is going to help solve that.”

Rosenfeld agreed. “We’re delighted,” she said. “We’re so very excited to have the start of this in the fall.”

Anders and her friends have raised about $55,000 in the past three years to make the fitness path happen, much of that coming from charity events. SPED*NET will host its third annual All Out For Autism race Aug. 26.
