NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Waveny Park become one giant backyard Monday evening as the town celebrated Americas independence with cold drinks, cookout food and the coloring of the night sky.
The 2011 edition of the New Canaan Family Fourth event proved popular again as thousands of New Canaanites and Fairfield County residents put down blankets, claimed spaces in the open field near Waveny House and basked in beautiful weather to close out the weekend.
While children and a few young adults were laughing and running, playing catch and tossing Frisbees, most of the adults exhaled and sat back in folding chairs with cold beverages and food close by. This is what its all about, said Steven Bukovcik of Norwalk, relaxing under a tree with his wife, Linda, and their friend Linda Schuler, also of Norwalk. Its about rest and relaxation. Its just great.
Definitely, said Schuler, who was attending the New Canaan outing for the first time.
Displays of American pride were easy to see, whether it was flags draped on trees or colorful stars and stripes blankets much like the one Diane and Peter Nemiroff sat on while relaxing at the conclusion of their holiday weekend. The Nemiroffs were not far from the giant flag in the middle of the field, close to where theyve sat for the past 23 years.
Its really the highlight of the evening, Nemiroff said, sipping on a glass of iced tea. Its always fun and we have a good time every year.
Grace Cross, 43, and her daughter Ellie, 18, also cut quite the patriotic figure, donning hats with American flags across the brim as they walked in the big field near Waveny House. Its such a nice day out, Ellie said, noting that a family member had the idea for the star-spangled lids. People asked and said, How did you make those hats?
Many of the visitors anxiously awaited the fireworks show, that part of the community event known for leaving people in awe and illuminating Waveny Park.
We love the fireworks and being out with friends, said Chrissy Woerz of New Canaan.
Her children, Whitney, 10, and Ashton, 8, were anxious to see the big light show. Whitney even wore a shirt decorated with a flag-themed cupcake and a sparkler. Whitney enjoys sparklers more than cupcakes, though. The frosting on the cupcake is too much, she said.
