PLANTSVILLE, Conn. Jacqueline Jaskiewicz is not afraid of taking on the biggest challenge.
While other young skiers might have stayed away from the Black Diamond run at Mount Southington, Jacqueline, 8, was more than happy to take on the toughest hill instead of the bunny hill. I like the challenge of a steep hill, and I like coming down the hill fast, said Jacqueline, who visited the ski area Monday from Darien with her brother, Christopher Jr., 5, and dad, Christopher.
After all, its much better than staying home and getting ready to go back to school. I like it because its winter and its cold, Christopher Jr. said. And Jacqueline added, And theres snow here.
Even with a lack of snow this winter, several Fairfield County families got their fix of the white stuff at Mount Southington, finally making use of their ski equipment on a long holiday weekend.
Temperatures in the mid-30s and low 40s were ideal to get people out on the trails, said Michelle Seaman, office manager for Mount Southington. This season has been a little slow with the unusually mild winter temperatures, but Presidents Day is typically a very busy day, Seaman said. A lot of people were planning to come.
Stephanie Gervasi, 38, of Fairfield, was all smiles as she got back on skis for the first time in about eight years. Were out having fun. Its nice. Its been a great experience, said Gervasi, who was with her son Chris, 6, and friends, the Krollman family. This is wonderful and by the end of the day, theyll all be tired.
Chris Gervasi and friend Aidan Krollman, also 6, said they preferred spending a day on the slopes to being in a museum or staying at home. Its really fun when youre going down the hill and when youre in the chairlift, Aidan said. His little brother, Cole, 4 and dad, Rick, didnt slip on skis but enjoyed stepping in the snow.
Its vacation week, so its a good day for them, Rick Krollman said.
