Upon arrival, they found hundreds of boxes and bags of groceries donated by residents of New Canaan and nearby communities, to stock on the shelves.
Among the bags of groceries were items in the yellow bags left in mailboxes throughout the community by members of the U.S. Postal Letter Carriers, along with instructions on where to make the donations after filling the bags with groceries.
“We get all of our food from food drives and donations from local churches, schools groups, organization, and generous people in our community," said Carol Harvy, coordinator of the New Canaan Food Pantry. "We are not supported by any federal, state or local government funds. There are no paid staff, it is 100 percent volunteer, rent is our only overhead.”
The New Canaan Food Pantry moved to its current location in St Mark’s Church about nine years ago. It has 250 eligible clients. They are all New Canaan residents who have been cleared through Health and Human Services. Clients range from 2 weeks old to the elderly.
Donations can be dropped off at St. Mark's any day of the week. The Food Pantry also accepts monetary donations, which can be mailed to: New Canaan Food Pantry, 77 Main St., New Canaan, CT 06048.
Members of the Hannah Benedict Carter New Canaan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution volunteer at the Food Pantry on a regular basis.
