Better Looks, Sounds at New Canaan Movies

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The sights and sounds of the next movie you see at the Playhouse Theater should be better than before.

Bow Tie Cinemas recently installed new equipment in the theaters, replacing its old film projectors for digital movie screeners. The theater also installed new silver screens, speakers, better buffering between its two theaters and equipment to show 3D movies in New Canaan.

Playhouse Theater General Manager Janet Amezquita said the new equipment had been needed for a while. The company that made its old projectors went out of business in the 1970s, and the sound quality was lacking. “It’s going to be a lot better,” said Amezquita, who showed the new equipment to media outlets Friday. “The sound and the quality of the pictures are a lot better.”

The film equipment upgrade goes along with new seating in both theaters, the recent addition of a handicapped accessible bathroom and the transformation of a space in front of the Elm Street theater into a display area to promote upcoming events, such as New Canaan’s first-ever Restaurant Week, starting next Friday. The town of New Canaan helped to pay for the display and the bathroom. In all, Bow Tie Cinemas and the town spent more than $300,000 on the upgrades, she said.
