Looking for a nice decorative clock to place on your mantel? Or are you in the market for a cookie jar with a bluebird on top? Or do you need a nice painting to accent a freshly painted wall?
The New Canaan Thrift Shop is the place for you. Nestled on Locust Avenue just outside of the main downtown shopping district, its a place filled with all sorts of interesting, gently used items.
We get a lot of interesting people. No two days are alike, said thrift shop Manager Dolores Klein. People come looking for all kinds of things.
The shop also accepts donations of old items, such as toys, appliances and sports equipment. Several bags filled with golf clubs are on the front porch just in time for spring.
Those bargains bring out a multitude of customers, some seeking a specific item, such as silverware or artwork, or others hoping to pick up something cool that just happens to catch their eyes.
Klein said the shop becomes a haven for people around Halloween as they search for the perfect accent or addition for their costumes. She said people also flocked to the shop to look for hats and scarves when the first Sex and the City movie debuted. Klein says shoppers come from beyond town borders, including from New York City, where thrift shops tend to be pricier.
They come to get lamps, toys, games, bags, movies, CDs, jewelry, just about everything, she said.
Fellow thrift shop volunteers Joan Guth and Helen DeBlasi say customers have fun sifting through the items on the shelves. You never know what youre going to find, DeBlasi said. All proceeds from the sales go to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County.
The New Canaan Thrift Shop is open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Donations are accepted from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Saturday.
