NEW CANAAN, Conn. Kim Krug found the time Thursday afternoon to finalize her childrens school wardrobes before the start of the new year. We bought school books and supplies before, Krug said. Now its time to get a few more clothes.
Only what she wanted did not match what her son, Jack, 7, had in mind. Krug was interested in shirts for Jack and his older sister Reilly, 11, during a visit to Candy Nichols clothing store on Elm Street. Jack, however, wanted another pair of red and white New Canaan spirit shorts. We dont need those, Krug said, despite Jacks pleading. He may get those shorts but maybe next month.
Stores downtown will gladly take the extra business. Several shops lost business last week as residents postponed school shopping to get food and home supplies to prepare for Hurricane Irenes arrival last weekend.
Candy Nichols co-owner Elizabeth Correa said the store was not busy earlier in the week. But business picked up as people started to regain power later in the week. A lot of people were in town, but they were not in the back-to-school frame of mind, she said. (Wednesday) was much better." Correa described Thursday as good so far.
The staff at Shoes N More on Elm Street was also active, helping parents find footwear for kids. Marina Fried of South Salem, N.Y., brought along daughters Lauren, 6, and Sydney, 4, to get shoes. Fried said she always planned on waiting until just before the start of school Tuesday.
We were on vacation before, Fried said. Now we have to get some shoes and socks. Lauren also mentioned that she needed soccer shoes because I have to practice soccer stuff.
