Apples Show Their Appeal at New Canaan Festival

NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – If you like the smell and taste of apples, you’ll want to be at the New Canaan Nature Center on Saturday.

The beloved fall fruit will take center stage as the Nature Center hosts its annual Cider Saturday and Harvest Celebration. For four hours, visitors can enjoy apples in a variety of ways, as tasty cider, sliced and dipped in honey, baked in homemade butter or just as a crisp treat.

“The trees have been growing them all summer and now they’re ripening,” said Chris Madden, a naturalist at the Nature Center. “They all taste delicious. My favorite are Macouns. They’re the best eating apple ever.”

Nature Center staff will also show kids how to use an old-fashioned apple press to make cider, a drink almost synonymous with the shift of the season. Madden expects between 200 and 400 visitors. “You get the smell of cider, the crisp taste of the apples. It’s a great combination of events,” he said. “I think the apple slingshot will be fun. You just shoot the apples as far as you can.”

Madden will also indulge in some baked goods, taking part in the pie-eating contest. “They’ve got to cut me loose from the front desk,” he said.

Cider Saturday will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for Nature Center member families, $15 for all other families. For more information, contact the New Canaan Nature Center at (203) 966-9577.
