I grew up in New Canaan and graduated from New Canaan public schools this year. Ive experienced New Canaans change over the last 18 years, particularly the loss of the feel of downtown New Canaan. I no longer take it for granted that the Gramophone will always be there, and that Waveny will always be a park. There are no guarantees that New Canaan will remain the same town I love. My New Canaan roots are why I identify with John Engel and his candidacy for selectman. John Engel, who is a third-generation New Canaanite, worked in Mead Park, the Baskin-Robbins and our Walter Stewart's Market. He knows New Canaan fundamentally better than Nick Williams (who grew up in Rhode Island). John is a business owner, a parent and a veteran. He is an alumnus of New Canaan High School, and to the seniors who graduated this spring, this is a very important distinction. Mr. Engel knows first-hand what is being lost in our town, and he will restore some of what has been lost. Mr. Engel will bring back some life to New Canaan.
