The 68-year-old grandfather of six is playing two elderly characters Adam, a servant, and Corin, a shepherd, a statement said. “That’s my niche now, old guys,” Butterworth said.
Before becoming an actor, he worked as a lawyer and business consultant until 2003, the statement said. He described the appeal of acting as provocative.
“When you first get a part,” Butterworth said in the statement, “it seems impossible. How can you even contemplate doing it? Whatever you are going to say on stage doesn’t come naturally. It’s not transformative like normal speech. So you fall back on your personal history and emotional background. And that’s never an easy process.”
His previous acting experience with other community theaters includes portraying Thomas More in “A Man for All Seasons,” Senex in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” Nils Bohr in “Copenhagen” and Dame Clarissa in “Snow White,” the release said. He also recently co-produced “Of Mice And Men."
He won’t be the only New Canaan resident participating in “Shakespeare on the Sound;” Director Claire Kelly also lives in town.
“As You Like It,” will run June 13 through June 30 in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park. Show times will start at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is free, but there is a suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for kids and seniors. People should bring blankets or low-slung chairs as well as picnic-style meals, the release said.
