According to Bedford resident Diane Roth, owner of L’Armoire in New Canaan, there are a few things women should not wear when they reach a "certain age." Her tips for the DON'T list follow:
Don't wear:
- Graphic print leggings. Especially with tight underwear or none at all.
- Pants that are neither here nor there. Go, instead for capri’s which hit your bottom calf muscle or cropped hits ankle bone. No half masts.
- If you're over 25, nix the shorts. Take a long look from behind and you'll agree.
- Unlined dresses. Long flowing dresses are great, not so much if they are see-through in bright sunshine.
- Bras as tops. Get a bra fitting – start with the foundations.
- Work out tank tops. Choose one that is cut high enough but not too high.
- Bingo wings/flappers can be avoided by wearing a sleeve to the elbow. Sleeveless tops can work if you have a suntan (real or faux) but be brutal on your arm assessment.
- Big hats. Remember you are supposed to be able to see when wearing them. They should also have a relationship to the outfit you are wearing.
- Peep toe shoes – unless you have good feet; then invest in a pedicure. if you don’t have good toes, don’t let them hang out. Peep toe make your legs look shorter and cuts the foot. Instead opt for a sandal, mule, slide or wedges.
- Too many accessories, i.e. summer bangles. Keep clothing loose and soft, like your jewelry. Matching sets are fabulous for over 80’s.
- Big with big. Choose a soft flowing top with narrow bottom/pant/pencil skirt or fitted top with a flowing pant. Big over big equals big. Even if you are tiny.
- Heavy makeup – keep it minimalist. Glossy, lighter make up. Bronzers are not paint.
- Heavy fabrics. Choose light fabrics which breathe, such as cool cottons and linens.
- Busy prints. Current trends are block color turquoise, pinks, melon. Find a color that looks good on your skin tone. Don’t rely on what looked good when you were 20-years-old.
