The main event during the day will be A Tale of Two Nations featuring Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante and Nation Beat performing its combination of contemporary percussion with the music and dance of one of Brazil’s oldest groups, a news release from the art center said. People will also be able to walk around the grounds and Sculpture Walk, an artist talk with photographer Jason Gardner, hands on demonstrations and other activities to people of all ages.
The artist talk will take place at 2 p.m. and the concert at 3 p.m., the release said.
The fun will start well before Saturday as there are several workshops taking place this week at the art center. Participants in the workshops will also get to walk in the parade being held on Saturday, and can register by visiting the art center’s website or by calling 203-966-9700, ext. 22.
On Thursday and Friday there will be a drumming workshop teaching the basics of Afro-Brazilian drumming found in northern Brazil. The workshop is open to teens and adults, costs $90 per person, and people only have to attend one of the two classes which will run from 5 to 7 p.m.
People should bring any percussion instruments they have, preferably Brazilian, the release said.
You can also take part in a costume making workshop learning how to make traditional Maracatu drumming and dancing outfits on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the release said. The school will provide all of the materials and does want to know if you have your own sewing machine.
The workshop is open to people of all ages, and the cost for the two-day workshop is $150 per person, the release said.
The free event on Saturday will run from 2 to 5 p.m. The art center is at 1037 Silvermine Road.
