New Canaan To Hold Annual Dog Day On Sunday

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — It may still be spring, but the dog days of summer will start this weekend in New Canaan with its annual dog day festival.

There will be activities for all of the canines and their human companions, including a dress up photo area with Venture Photography, dog makeovers by The Hairy Barker, and a “pet-oriented” scavenger hunt, a news release said. There will also be food and beverages and live music by George Gensure.

Participants can gather at Village Critter Outfitter, 107 Cherry St.

Cherry Street will be closed to traffic from Main Street to Burtis Avenue from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is free, but there is a $20 charge to register your dog for any of the contests. The proceeds from the day will go to Pet Animal Welfare Society.

Pet Animal Welfare Society and other shelters and rescue groups will be on hand with dogs to adopt.

? 12:15 p.m.: Agility Training Demonstration with Heather Witt

? 12:30 p.m.: Wag Away Dog Contest    

? 12:45 p.m.: Pet Massage Benefits Demonstration by Katie Knechtle

? 1 p.m.: Music Performance for young children by Emily Hall from Mary Ann Hall's Music For Children   

? 1:30 p.m.: Family Resemblance Look-Alike Contest

? 1:45 p.m.: Dogs & Divas Fashion Parade featuring fashions by L’Armoire & Village Critter Outfitter

? 2 p.m.: Smoochin’ with your Pooch Best Kiss Contest

? 2:30 p.m.: Dunkin’ for Dogs Contest

? 2:45 p.m.: Winner of scavenger hunt announced

? 3 p.m.: Event closes
