New Canaan Expects Ticket Blitz For Family Fourth

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A mad dash to get tickets for the New Canaan Family Fourth is expected to begin Tuesday.

Sales of passes for the annual Independence Day outing at Waveny Park are on par with sales this time last year, said Town Recreation Director Steve Benko, a member of the Family Fourth organizing committee.

Several people visited First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III’s office Monday in search of passes. About 100 people purchased passes Monday at the recreation offices at Waveny House, Benko said.

“We’re doing all right,” he said. “We’re about even with last year, but a lot of people came in at the last minute.”

That should be the case Tuesday, Benko said. He expects about 200 passes will be sold between the recreation office and Town Hall on Tuesday. “I think the holiday snuck up on people too fast,” he said. “The kids have only been out of school for about a week. People might be going away or not.”

There’s plenty of enthusiasm for the party, which usually fills Waveny Park for games, outdoor eating, relaxing and fireworks at night, said Town Administrator Tom Stadler, chairman of the event.

“People are really looking forward to it,” Stadler said. “There’s a solid group that comes every year.”

Stadler is also keeping an eye on the sky. Early forecasts have thunderstorms coming to New Canaan for a portion of Wednesday, although that’s before sundown. The big event is still set for Wednesday, he said, but organizers do not want people to have to deal with rainy skies while in Waveny Park.

Stadler said he will decide at 10 a.m. Wednesday whether the festivities will be postponed until Thursday. Notices will be placed on the town’s website and elsewhere, he said.
