NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Cellist Matt Haimovitz and British a capella trio Voice will be featured in a musical performance of "If Music Be the Food of Love" on Sunday, Feb.21, at 3 p.m. in Sara Victoira Hall at the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan.
Haimovitz and Voice will collaborate on Bach, Glass, Shakespearean sonnets and more in their tribute to love’s beauty, heartache, and humor.
The Shakespearean sonnets have been arranged for voice and cello in honor of the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death. Come celebrate the winter “Living Art” event — and after the performance enjoy a reception of sweets and bubbly in the Galleries with an opportunity to meet the world-renowned musical artists.
Formed in 2006, Voice performs music from the medieval compositions of Hildegard von Bingen, 21st-century commissions, and songs from around the world. Their distinctive sound is driven by individual voices that blend to create beautiful harmonies.
Haimovitz is an Israeli-born cellist, now based in the United States and Canada. He mainly plays a cello made by Matteo Goffriller in 1710. Educated at Harvard and Juilliard, he made his debut in 1984, at the age of 13, as soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. At 17, he made his first recording with James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for Deutsche Grammophon. He has gone on to perform with such orchestras and conductors as the Berlin Philharmonic with James Levine and the New York Philharmonic with Mehta.
He has also recorded a set of complete Bach Suites for unaccompanied cello. Haimovitz champions new music and initiates groundbreaking collaborations as well as creating innovative recording projects for Oxingale Records.
Tickets are $60 and include champagne and chocolates with the artists. There is limited seating.
