That's because the Fairfield resident and renowned photographer has long used late 19th-century methods for his photographs.
He will be explaining his processes at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m. Some of his work is displayed there as part of the Carriage Barn's 35th Annual Photography Show, "History and Process," through Feb. 8.
The artist, who admits to owning hundreds of vintage cameras from the 19th and 20th centuries, said he's currently working with a 1907 Century View camera. He also uses cameras he has made, everything from sophisticated instruments to shoe boxes with a pinhole in them.
In addition, Mezzanotte coats his own papers, allowing what he called "the material presence of the medium to effect the outcome."
"I experiment with possibilities and do my best work when I'm focused on the questions and not the answers," he said. "By looking back at history when each photographer had to make his own material and basically be his own chemist, I discovered processes that allowed me the kind of freedom I wanted."
