Affordable Mattress & Furniture is at 608 West Ave. in Norwalk. The store will donate 10 percent of sales in June and July to the K-9 fund. The New Canaan canine officer Rocky, a German shepherd, died during a training accident in April.
People who visit Affordable Mattress on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. will be treated to hamburgers, hot dogs and other barbecue fare. Owners Kevin O’Shea and Erin Babrowicz of New Canaan will accept donations for the K-9 Unit in addition to donating 10 percent of store sales for the next two months.
“In today’s world, a dog on the police force is very important,’’ O’Shea said. “Unfortunately, funds for a new dog are not in the police budget. Dogs play a vital role for the force, and we’re just trying to help out for the next few months.”
O’Shea said he and Babrowicz distributed fliers in New Canaan last weekend to promote the barbecue, and already have acquired $500 for the K-9 fund.
“It’s a good start,’’ O’Shea said. “The more people we can reach, the better off we’ll be. Dog people tend to be very receptive. It’s amazing that so many people don’t know the dog died. People think a K-9 dog might not be needed in New Canaan because it’s such a small town. But there have been a lot of instances where the K-9 played an important role. Dogs are an important part of today’s police work.”
