Covid-19: CT Schools Will Stay Closed Until At Least May 20, Lamont Says

Schools in Connecticut will remain closed through at least the middle of May as the state continues combating the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont met with Connecticut State Department of Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona and announced that schools will not be re-opened until Wednesday, May 20 or later.

The governor noted that hospitalizations due to COVID-19 have been plateauing in the region, which is a sign that social distancing and “stay at home” orders have been effective in slowing the spread of the virus.

“This is the lowest amount in two weeks,” Lamont said during a conference call on Thursday, April 9. “The curve is beginning to bend a little bit.

"Even those hospitals in southern Fairfield County that were hit first, still have the capacity. In a very slight way. We’re gaining capacity now.”

As of Wednesday, April 8, there were 8,781 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Connecticut - including 4,417 in Fairfield County - that have hospitalized 1,418 people. There have been 335 deaths statewide since the outbreak began.

Lamont is expected to release more information during his daily COVID-19 news briefing later on Thursday afternoon.
