The town of Greenwich has declared a snow emergency, the Board of Selectmen announced Tuesday afternoon, as the National Weather Service predicted icy conditions through Wednesday.
A freezing rain advisory is in effect until noon Wednesday for Greenwich and the rest of southern Fairfield County. Freezing rain and sleet is expected to move through the region after midnight Wednesday and continue through late Wednesday morning before changing into rain by early afternoon. A quarter-inch of ice accumulation is expected by Wednesday afternoon.
Drivers are advised to be wary of dangerous travel conditions during the Wednesday morning commute, including the possibility of downed tree limbs and power lines as a result of the ice.
Residents and visitors should remove their vehicles from designated roads under snow emergency rules. Cars parked along snow routes are subject to fines and towing. The emergency will remain in effect until further notice.
